My
name is Charles H. Smith and with the help of my web
designer brother Leon, we have created this web site
to support the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life.
Background:
I'm a Vietnam Veteran who was married on June 4,
1966 and drafted into the United States Army one month
later on July 4, 1966. After six months of basic training,
I was standing in a rice paddy halfway around the world
feeling very lonely and missing my new bride Barbara.
Without
the daily letters of love and support (plus the weekly
care packages) from my loving wife Barb, I would have
come back a total mess. For some unknown reason my life
was spared.
I returned home to Barbara and we began raising a family.
We had two beautiful children,
a son Jeffrey and a daughter Julie. Life was good. We
became a close and loving family.
Almost
36 years later, Barbara and I were getting ready to
retire and ride into the sunset! But, without any warning,
our life was turned upside-down when Barbara was diagnosed
on December 26, 2000 with breast cancer. She courageously
battled against this horrible disease until it took
her life on March 4, 2002.
After
feeling sorry for myself for a short period, I thanked
God for all he had blessed my Family with and asked
what I could do to carry on?
I
have lost my dear Grandmother Harriet Hurley, my hero
and Father Bert D. Smith, and now my best Friend and
Wife Barbara M. Smith, all to cancer.
Like
most people who have lost a loved one, I felt so helpless.
It's
not in my nature to accept defeat and as long as I can
draw a breath, I will do every-thing I can to fight
against this cruel menace called cancer!
Like
most of us, I'm not a Doctor or a Researcher. I do feel
however, that if we can raise enough money to support
them in their work, it will help save many lives and
a cure will be found!
This
website was founded upon two main goals:
1.
Raise funds for the American Cancer Society, whose mission
statement parallel my own feelings and the feelings
of most of us.
2.
Show our support for those battling this terrible disease
and in remembrance of the loved ones that have been
taken from us by it.
With
Your Help "WE WILL WIN THE WAR ON CANCER"
GOD
BLESS,
Charles
H. Smith
